Laureus Youth Empowerment through sports .

Laureus has been part of Soweto Touch Rugby from 2009 and we are extremely excited to be part of their successes. They have continued to bless us and give us more opportunities in inviting our participants from ages 18-24 to participate in the Laureus Youth Empowerment through sports program. Teaching young people how to use sport for the good of their communities is one of the most important things Laureus does around the world. And one of the most exciting ways this is now being achieved is through the Laureus YES programme. The youngsters will also benefit from IT skills sessions, education in the social and psychological aspects of sport and, crucially, even lessons in how to run their own sport for good projects focussing on subjects like fundraising and marketing.

  • - widened social networks
  • - Improvements in physical and mental health
  • - Access to accredited qualifications, training placements, or employment
  • - reduced risky sexual behaviour
  • - reduced discrimination or stereotyping
  • - increased confidence and self esteem

Within the same year Mokoena’s athletic abilities were honoured through her election as Captain of the u15A champions’ league. A year later, her election to Captain of the u17 STA was added to her list of credentials. She is also the winner of the Provincial Colours for touch rugby, and a role model to many youngsters who display a talent and passion for sport within her community.

We are also extremely proud to say Bongiwe Nhleko has been selected to being the YES Co-Ordinator for 2015

We look forward to hearing which participants will be selected to being the 2015 Pioneers and protégés from Soweto touch Association to represent us at the YES Program.

We as the Soweto Touch association would like to send out a huge thank you to Laureus for the opportunities given to our association we shall continue to fly the flag high.

Nthabesing Mokoena

For the 16 year-old Nthabesing Mokoena this infamous quote above rings markedly true.

Mokoena’s prowess on the rugby pitch did not go unnoticed by the Soweto School’s Rugby Programme (SSRP) which Mokoena has been a member since Grade 10.In 2012, as Marc Hindle sat amongst the supporters at the Johannesburg Interprovincial Tournament, held at Zoo Lake, he noticed Mokoena’s unique gift for the game. He wasted no time in arranging a financed scholarship for her education and sporting activities, at Greenside High in Johannesburg.

Mokoena is aware that talent and passion are not enough to maintain success in life, both on and off the field. Preparation and discipline are required particularly when times are tough and hope can be lost in an instant; and she is no stranger to tough times. Tragedy struck early in Mokoena’s life, when in 2008, her mother suffered a stroke and her eldest sister became the breadwinner of the family. Playing rugby enabled her to constructively find a physical outlet, which helped her come to terms with the circumstances that fate had bestowed upon her, all the while keeping hope firmly in her sights, no matter how far away it seemed.

The Soweto Schools Rugby Programme takes a stand for socially disadvantaged children to support them concerning their educational training in order to afford a professional future and ensure social integration.
